Interprofessional Patient Safety

Each year since 2013, the University of Miami’s Interprofessional Patient Safety Course has brought together nursing and medical students for a week of collaboration. Together they take on simulated patient encounters—with both high-fidelity mannequins and standardized patients—to elicit the observations, questions and interactions that enhance communication and teamwork and help reduce error. The opening of the Simulation Hospital has brought a new dimension of realism to the course’s nearly 80 accelerated nursing students and 150 medical students. The Simulation Hospital’s size and layout allow seamless flow from simulation to debriefing room, keeping continuity of the simulation thought process and experience, with easy access to control room for faculty and technical staff. Clinical and patient rooms look appropriate to the scenario, enhancing the realistic quality of the Simulation Hospital’s physical context.
